Songs of Exile
A Medieval Musical Journey - compositions from the 9th to 13th centuries exploring themes of exile, resilience, and the search for peace.
Programme Notes
Today, just as it was a thousand years ago, many find themselves far from home. Whether as refugees, migrants, or those starting anew in unfamiliar lands, people continue to navigate the profound sense of loss and the flickering hope that comes with displacement.
In the Middle Ages, the world was traversed by scholars and preachers, merchants and envoys, all venturing into the unknown. They travelled without the certainty of maps, the internet, or satellite navigation, yet they carried with them the universal language of music. Songs were composed by these travellers, and for them, serving as both a companion and a chronicle of their journeys.
Dating from the 9th to the 13th centuries, these medieval compositions explore timeless themes of exile, resilience, and the search for peace. They speak to emotions that have echoed through the centuries, resonating as deeply with today’s displaced souls as they did with the wanderers of the distant past.
