Anno Domini 1166

Music from the Kotor Pontifical and Kotor Missal, manuscripts created for the consecration of St. Tryphon Cathedral in 1166.

Programme Notes

The Cathedral of St. Tryphon in Kotor was consecrated on 19 July 1166. The music of that time has been transmitted to us in two twelfth-century manuscripts created for St Tryphon’s Cathedral - the Kotor Pontifical (now preserved in the Library of the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg, Russia) and the Kotor Missal (now preserved in the Berlin State Library, Germany). Works from these two manuscripts forms the core of the programme. Unfortunately, the complete musical text of the mass for the consecration of Kotor Cathedral has not survived.

The Ordinarium (the unchanged parts of the Mass) were usually recorded and preserved separately from the Proprium (the changed parts of the Mass) at that time, so for this programme the Ordinarium parts are taken from other, primarily Italian, manuscripts of the 12th century, which were also recorded, like the Kotor manuscripts, in Beneventan notation.

The programme was premiered in St. Tryphon Cathedral in Kotor in 2024
